Gloria Talks Funny
Directed By: Kendall Goldberg | Runtime: 13 min | Plays In Short Block: Drama Comedy 1
This film came from a place of frustration, not just in my own life, but also from all females in the entertainment industry. I first worked with Candi Milo on a short film called BARK MITZVAH (2014). We shot in upstate New York with 12 dogs and a cat, alongside a Tony-Award-winning dog trainer. It was quite the experience and was one I will never forget because it jumpstarted my friendship with Candi Milo. Since then, she has told me many stories about the backlash she faces as a voice actress, based solely on her gender and age. GLORIA TALKS FUNNY follows Gloria, a hard working, down-on-her luck voice actress who hasn’t had a “good gig” in many years. Trying her best to look past the meaningless and degrading jobs her agent sends her way, she befriends her sound engineer, Kevin, who ends up pushing her to realize she’s more than just the voice behind the famed cartoon that started her career. When a fan recognizes her and asks if she’ll be voicing the remake of her old cartoon, she immediately confronts her agent, Dennis, as to why she hasn’t heard about this sooner. When she realizes Dennis isn’t going to help her become BioBoy again, she takes matters into her own hands. With the help of Kevin, and a new found interest, she beings to understand that she is talented, funny, and may not need to be BioBoy again to feel fulfilled in her career. I hope an audience can laugh and enjoy the comedy behind this film, but that they also recognize the bigger picture. I hope people see and understand what’s happening behind the camera (or microphone, in this case), and I hope up-and-coming filmmakers will help bring change to our industry.
