WALT DISNEY – MASTER OF DREAMERS | OCT 17TH, 2019
Following the success of Disneyland in California, Walt Disney took his style of themed entertainment East and premiered what would be 4 spectacular shows at the 1964/65 NY World’s Fair. Up until this point, East Coast audiences had never experienced Disney style shows and attractions like in California. Walt Disney used the fair as a testing ground, developing the ride system and audio animatronic technology needed for his most ambitious project to date. After secretly acquiring 27,000 acres in central Florida, more than twice the size of Manhattan, Walt Disney announced to the world that they would build an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, E.P.C.O.T. in Central Florida. A utopian progress city where people would live in a way that had never been done before. EPCOT would ‘never cease to be a blueprint of the future, designed to stimulate American ideas for urban living. In a bizarre twist of fate, Walt Disney would fall ill and quickly die of lung cancer before the project ever broke ground. Walt’s older brother Roy rallied the company together and insisted they would move forward with Walt’s dream without him. In a series of exclusive interviews with historians and the last living designers and engineers who worked closest with Walt Disney, we explore the details of how Walt Disney World got built without their leader and mentor, why the company ultimately abandoned Walt’s original concept for EPCOT and how Walt Disney’s influence, pushed the imagineers to complete Walt’s last big idea.
